My list of top #CEDIA14 Do NOTs

Posted on September 5, 2014 at 12:40 AM Comments comments (1)

There are plenty of people that will gladly share all of their ideas on what you should DO while you are at CEDIA Expo. But I’m going to help you cull the list by telling you the 10 things you should NOT do at the Expo.

See, this will be my 16th Expo and I’ve managed to learn a few things over the years. So whether you’re a total Expo Noob or a grizzled veteran, there are probably a couple of things you can learn from th...

What I'm Looking Forward to at CEDIA 2014

Posted on July 11, 2014 at 3:00 PM Comments comments (1)

With CEDIA EXPO just two short months away, it’s time to start getting excited for this annual spectacle custom installers have come to know and love.

This will by my 16th EXPO and far from familiarity breeding contempt, I think I actually come to look forward to the show a little more each year.

And having been to EXPO in New Orleans, Atlanta, Indy, and Minneapolis, I can definitively say th...

Five Ways to Turn Social into $ocial

Posted on February 11, 2014 at 4:40 PM Comments comments (1)

“You can be a millionaire… and never pay taxes! You say, ‘Steve, how can I be a millionaire and never pay taxes?’ First…get a million dollars.” -- Steve Martin

Sometimes when I read about people talking about social media for their business and needing to embrace social media to be successful, it makes me think of that Steve Martin quote. It’s like saying becoming a millionaire is ea...

My Biggest, Bestest, Mostest CES 2014 Takeaways

Posted on January 16, 2014 at 11:25 AM Comments comments (27)

Another CES is in the bag, and after spending a week in the eye of the storm, it is nice to be back home away from the throngs of people and electron bombardment.

After taking a couple of days to let things settle and go over my notes and work through the weird ear-clogging head cold I came back with, here’s a list of the items that most stuck out to my eyes and ears while wandering the near 2-million square feet of Vegas show spac...

3D Goes For Resurrection With Glasses-Free

Posted on January 16, 2014 at 11:05 AM Comments comments (30)

In a way, 3D is kind of like a technological cockroach; no one really wants it, but it also just won’t seem to die. The TV manufacturers are making another attempt to bring 3D back to the market, but this time in a glasses-free version.

Technically known as auto-stereoscopic 3D, glasses-free 3D was being implemented in a variety of ways by multiple manufacturers at CES 2014, and I did my best to visit all of the booths and see the ...

Video Booth Highlights From CES 2014

Posted on January 16, 2014 at 11:00 AM Comments comments (0)

If you’ve never made it out to Vegas for CES, then it is hard to imagine the immensity of the booths that the major video manufacturers build. Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, Sharp…these are giant, walled fortresses in the midst of the convention center all showing the latest technologies that will be gracing the world in the coming months/years.

I combed the Las Vegas Convention Center’s Central Hall and visited each of t...

Was 2013 Worthy of Festivus Celebration or Just a Lump of Coal?

If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.

—Martin Luther King Jr.

As 2013 winds to a close, it seems fitting to look back and see how the year treated the three of us: us the individual, us the company, and us the industry. Are we better off as 2013 draws to a close and are we still moving ...

The Case Against the Integrated Thermostat

Posted on October 15, 2013 at 2:15 PM Comments comments (0)

One of the big announcements at the CEDIA Expo this year was Nest finally opening up its API for 3rd party integration, starting with Control4. Before the show, there was a lot of resentment and anger towards Nest for creating a product that was so cool, so cutting edge, so popular and Apple-like and yet one that wouldn’t interface with all of the systems that we install. (I might have been guilty of piling some of this on as well...)

CEDIA 2013: Looking Back on Expo - Trends and Tech

Posted on October 9, 2013 at 1:00 PM Comments comments (0)

It takes about a full week to decompress from the CEDIA show. After spending three solid days wandering aisles under the uncompromising glare of arc sodium overhead lighting, and having your body bombarded with enough WiFi waves to make David Banner squirm, you come home so overloaded with the sights and sounds of Expo, it takes a bit to just…(deep breath)…sit back and process it all. Well, I’m done processing, and here is my wrap on some of the trends ...

Watch out, Cali Lewis! Sciacca video interviewer!

Posted on October 2, 2013 at 4:20 PM Comments comments (1)

So, @TreyTweeting reached out to me on Twitter prior to the CEDIA Expo and asked if I would be willing to stop by some booths while he shot some video of me. I said, sure, why not. (Actually I procrastinated for several days while I tried to put my show schedule together.)

So I showed up to our meeting fully thinking that I was going to be filmed while he asked me what I thought about various products when Trey explained that, no, I woul...

CEDIA 2013: Looking back on Expo - The Best Demos

Posted on October 2, 2013 at 10:05 AM Comments comments (1)

It seems that just days ago, all we could talk about was the upcoming CEDIA Expo in Denver, Colorado. Planning for Expo, getting to Expo, how to party at Expo… Then, with the speed of Gigabit data rushing through a Cat6 cable, Expo was upon us, and if you made it to Denver then you doubtless have some memories or made Expo memorable to you. And I certainly welcome you to share your thoughts in the comments section; honestly, one of my favorite things about attending the s...

Going to CEDIA 13? What's the worst that can happen?

CEDIA 13 On the Cheaps Plan

Posted on June 20, 2013 at 2:25 PM Comments comments (2)

A couple of days ago, CEDIA Communications Manager, Olivia Sellke – not to be confused with a Selkie, a mythological mermaid-like creature said to live as a seal in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. However, it must be noted that I have never actually seen Olivia Sellke in the water, so it is entirely possible she is indeed both a Sellke and a Selkie, so we mustn’t rush to judgment here… - posed the question, “What is your best ...

Like many of you, I received a postcard from CEDIA the other day getting me pumped for the 2013 EXPO.

Honestly, not much pumping is required. I love the EXPO. And by “love” I mean I frickin’ love the EXPO

CES 2013 Press Day - Dinner, DISH, Denmark and Douchey Hats

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 5:25 PM Comments comments (0)

This pretty much sums up the whirlwind which is CES… I started dinner my first night at the same time I was climbing into bed the previous night! It’s Vegas, baby, so you’ve got to just suck it up! Fortunately it was an amazing dinner.

I thought that my dinner dance card had been filled up, but a look at my Sunday night schedule showed an opening that GoldenEar Technologies Sandy Gross was only too kind to fill. (Sandy a...

Unveiling CES 2013

Posted on January 14, 2013 at 6:15 PM Comments comments (0)

I’m going to assume that if you’re reading this it means that you aren’t actually in Las Vegas attending CES 2013 right now (or rather didn't make it to the show last week). So, I’m going to share with you what it’s like to be here, on the first pre-day of the show and through the week.

Sunday at CES is about arriving and getting settled. ...
